April is World Autism month. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.
At Huntington Local Schools, we embrace the wonderful perspectives our ASD students bring to the classroom. We strive to support their learning in a safe, supportive environment. Join HLSD and Autism Speaks to fearlessly stand for a world where autistic people are recognized and have the opportunities they deserve. Take the pledge here: https://www.autismspeaks.org/world-autism-month
I will be a true friend and advocate of the full autistic community.
I will respect and support those with autism and champion acceptance, not just awareness, of differences.
I will clarify misconceptions about autism and guide others to reputable resources to help them on their journey.
I will challenge others to provide meaningful opportunities for autistic individuals and their families.
I will celebrate all wins, big or small, of the autism community.
I will #ActFearlessly and stand alongside the autism community in the pursuit of a better world for those with autism.

Our Huntington High School Science Club traveled to Camp Oty’Okwa, in the Hocking Hills region, to attend the Spring YCAT Retreat organized by the Rural Action Environmental Education Program. The Youth Climate Action Team within our club focuses on the impacts of climate at local and global scales. While studying these ideas at camp, we hiked to Split Rocks, played the Climate Fresk game, met Ohio University graduate students from Nepal and Ghana, went on a sensory hike to Counselors’ Cave, and discussed our role in making positive impacts on our community. One of our goals was to increase our climate literacy through these experiences. The students demonstrated an increased understanding of the complexity of climate change, and are motivated to continue to take action.
