HLSD Safe Start Plan

Dear Huntington Family,

Huntington Local School District believes in the importance of education.  Our mission is to cultivate the brilliance in every child.  We are dedicated to sustaining a learning environment that is nurturing, safe and healthy for our students and staff.  Our team has worked diligently to listen to the concerns and views of our community.  It is our hope that the plan we have developed will meet the needs of your family while also providing a quality education to the children of our township.

Families will have two options for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year:

  1. The first option is to attend school 5 days a week on campus with social distancing and precautions in place for students and staff. Specifics regarding the protocols that will be implemented within the district can be found in the attached document.  If you are planning to choose in-person instruction, no further information is required from the family.

  2. The second option is to participate in online instruction from home with Huntington Teaching Staff using Google Classroom. Students will be required to log in each school day and complete the class activities.  Attendance will be taken each day. To sign up for the online classroom option, please fill out the attached form and return to the District Office by August 3rd.  A mandatory parent training will be held the week before school begins.

This plan is fluid and will most likely change based upon COVID conditions and health department recommendations

The Ohio Department of Health has released the Ohio Public Health Advisory Alert System.  This is a color-coded system designed to supplement existing statewide orders through a data-driven framework to assess the degree of the virus’ spread and to engage and empower individuals, businesses, communities, local governments, and others in their response and actions.  Huntington Local Schools will be utilizing the Alert System to inform their decisions regarding the delivery of curriculum and instruction to our students.

Parents have 2 options for their child(ren):

  • Return to school following guidelines from Ohio and Ross County Department of Health and CDC.

  • Online Instruction with Huntington Teaching Staff utilizing Google Classroom

If Ross County reaches Level 3 Alert Level or we experience a significant number of positive cases in our school, we will assess risk and transition to Plan B upon recommendations from the local health departments.

  • Online Instruction for all students

  • Students identified with a disability will be serviced via video therapy

Health and Safety

District Protocols

  • Families will be asked to do home assessments of their students’ health each day before sending them to school. 

    • Are you currently experiencing any of the following symptoms? 

                                   -     Fever

                                   -     Cough

                                   -     Shortness of Breath

                                   -     Sore Throat

                                   -     Loss of taste or smell

                                   -     Chills

                                   -     Head or muscle aches

                                   -     Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting

  • Staff will be asked to do self-assessments of their own health before reporting to work each day. 

  • Masks are strongly recommended for students 3-12. One reusable, washable mask will be provided for each student at the beginning of the school year.  Parents please wash masks frequently.

  • Masks/face shields are required for all staff.

  • No visitors unless prescheduled with office for meeting with staff and/or administration.

  • All visitors must wear face-covering.

  • Daily disinfection of classrooms

  • Classrooms will be decluttered with minimal furniture 

  • Student sign out for MS/HS will be at Reception Center in Lobby, parent returns to car after signing student out

  • Student sign out for Elementary will be in Elementary Office

  • No in-person field trips the first semester, risk will be reassessed regarding second-semester field trips.

  • No students may stay after school unless staying for a practice.

  • Water fountains equipped with bottle fillers. Students must bring a water bottle each day to school.

  • Hand-sanitizing stations throughout the district buildings.

  • Social Distancing when possible in the classroom and cafeteria.

  • Each building will have a quarantine area for students that have fever.

  • Students must be fever free for 72 hours without medication before returning to school.  

  • If you or someone in your household have tested positive for COVID-19, you are strongly encouraged to contact the school district as soon as possible.


Elementary Protocols

  • Grades K-3 Self contained

  • Grade 4 - 2 Teacher Teams - Teacher will move between classrooms.

  • Specials, Intervention Specialists scheduled times for disinfecting tables between groups of students

  • Every student will have a supply box with their own personal supplies, no community supplies will be used in classrooms.

  • Recess will be one grade level at a time

  • Grades 3 & 4 will eat lunch in the classroom

  • Grades K-2 will eat lunch in the cafeteria with space utilized to ensure social distancing as much as possible

  • Chromebooks for each student  

Middle School  Protocols

  • Every student will have their own personal supplies, no community supplies will be used in classrooms.

  • Each student will be provided an individual chromebook 

  • The Google Classroom platform will be utilized in all courses

  • Students and staff will walk on the right side of the hallways

  • Stairways will be one way traffic only

  • 2 lunch times (5-6 and 7-8) will be offered to ensure students are social distancing as much as possible

High School Protocols

  • Each student will be assigned their own Chromebook.

  • Stairways will be one way traffic only.

  • Students and staff will walk on the right side of the hallway.

  • If books are needed, each student will be assigned a book to use. 

  • Every student should have their own personal supplies.  Community supplies will not be provided.


  • All students riding bus will be required to wear masks

  • Assigned seating on the bus

  • Social Distancing when possible

  • Parents may opt to bring their children to and from school


To ensure staff have adequate time to prepare their classrooms to adhere to the guidelines they will return to school August 18-21 without students.  

To ensure that students receive adequate instruction and practice on the guidelines we will follow a staggered start the first two days of school.  

  • Only Grades K, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 will come to school August 24th.

  • Only Grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 will come to school August 25th.

  • All Grades will begin regular session school August 26th.

Protocol for Positive Cases within our School

When a positive case is identified within our district, the district will follow direction from the Ross County health department regarding quarantine.  HLSD will utilize the CDC’s School Decision Tree to determine actions following a positive case of COVID:
