What does a School Counselor do?

A School Counselor addresses the needs of the students in three realms:  Academic, Social/Emotional, and Future Planning.  In the high school academic realm, the School Counselor helps students schedule classes, makes sure that the students meet graduation requirements, helps students pursue specific pathways i.e. college, vocational school, adult career training.  In the high school social/emotional realm, the School Counselor can provide short term counseling and crisis intervention to individual students.  The School Counselor also organizes and facilitates schoolwide mental health initiatives.  When a student or family need ongoing counseling or other family supports, the School Counselor can help with referrals to appropriate services and agencies.  In the high school future planning realm, the School Counselor assists students with transitioning to the next phase of life beyond high school.  This includes career exploration, and assistance with the college application process and other career training programs.
